About the Team

OpenAI’s Agentic Data Science team helps shape how AI agents are built, deployed, and improved across our products. We partner with product, engineering, research, and security teams to define meaningful measures of success, understand how our systems behave in the real world, and translate evidence into better decisions.

As AI agents become more capable, they can write and execute code, access sensitive systems, and complete increasingly complex tasks with greater autonomy. These capabilities create powerful opportunities to improve cybersecurity, but they also introduce risks that traditional security tools and processes were not designed to address. Meeting this moment requires new ways to measure security, evaluate defenses, and distinguish genuine risk reduction from friction that slows users down.

About the Role

We are looking for a senior data scientist to help define what effective cybersecurity looks like in the age of AI agents.

You will work across OpenAI’s Security organization and cybersecurity product teams to measure emerging risks, improve internal security controls, and shape AI-powered security products. The problems are foundational: How do we know whether an agent’s security controls are effective? Which safeguards meaningfully reduce risk, and which create unnecessary friction? When an AI system identifies a potential vulnerability, how do we determine whether the finding is accurate, actionable, and ultimately resolved? How do we detect anomalous behavior or risky access when the systems themselves are changing rapidly?

You will report into Data Science while partnering closely with Security, Cyber Product, Engineering, and Research. This is a high-ownership role for someone who can establish a new analytical discipline, operate across organizational boundaries, and turn ambiguous security challenges into measurable improvements.

In This Role You Will

• Define how we measure AI-agent security. Establish metrics and evaluation frameworks for security-control coverage, agent behavior, sensitive actions, access patterns, detection quality, and emerging risks.

• Improve security controls without introducing unnecessary friction. Quantify the effectiveness and operational costs of safeguards, including false positives, blocked actions, escalations, approval delays, and recovery paths. Help teams make controls safer, more precise, and easier to use.

• Build the data foundations for security decisions. Partner with engineering and data teams to improve instrumentation, connect fragmented telemetry, establish trusted datasets, and surface important coverage and data-quality gaps.

• Strengthen detection and response. Identify meaningful signals of anomalous behavior, risky access, sensitive-data exposure, and other security-relevant activity. Evaluate whether interventions improve detection quality, response times, and real-world security outcomes.

• Shape AI-powered cybersecurity products. Partner with product, engineering, and research teams to assess how effectively AI systems identify security issues, support developer and enterprise workflows, and create measurable customer value.

• Develop evaluation systems for security findings. Define quality measures for findings, including accuracy, severity, actionability, duplication, resolution, and downstream impact. Connect model behavior and product changes to outcomes such as triage, remediation, and vulnerability reduction.

• Understand the complete security workflow. Measure how users discover, investigate, validate, prioritize, and resolve security issues. Identify opportunities to improve activation, adoption, retention, and enterprise value across customer-facing cybersecurity products.

• Design rigorous measurement and experimentation strategies. Evaluate new models, security controls, product features, and workflows through controlled experiments, staged rollouts, observational analyses, and other methods appropriate for high-stakes environments.

• Translate analysis into security and product strategy. Identify the highest-value decisions, clarify tradeoffs, recommend where teams should invest, and communicate findings clearly to technical partners and senior leadership.

• Help establish a new security data science capability. Build a focused roadmap, create durable operating rhythms across Data Science and Security, and help shape how this discipline grows over time.

You Might Thrive in This Role If You Have

• 5+ years of experience in data science, applied research, analytics, or a related quantitative field, with a track record of owning ambiguous, high-impact problems.

• Experience in cybersecurity, trust and safety, fraud or abuse prevention, privacy, platform integrity, or another domain involving adversarial behavior and difficult-to-measure risks.

• Strong proficiency in SQL and Python, including experience investigating complex datasets, working through incomplete instrumentation, and building reproducible analytical workflows.

• Experience defining meaningful metrics and evaluation frameworks when ground truth is limited, outcomes are delayed, or important risks cannot be observed directly.

• Strong judgment in experimentation, causal inference, observational analysis, and the practical limitations of different measurement approaches.

• The ability to partner effectively with security engineers, product managers, software engineers, researchers, data engineers, and senior leaders.

• A demonstrated ability to translate technical analysis into concrete improvements in products, systems, controls, or organizational priorities.

• Comfort operating independently, defining a roadmap, and bringing structure to a domain without established processes or industry standards.

• Experience with detection engineering, threat research, security operations, insider risk, identity and access management, or privacy-preserving security analytics.

We are looking for a Head of Fund Analytics & Automation who is a hands-on builder, rigorous with data, and fluent in finance conversations to join our Credit Fund team in the office of the Chief Credit Officer. The best candidate will be someone who thrives in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, and exceptionally dynamic setting and is excited to design, build, and operate the fund’s entire data and automation stack end to end — and then own it as the fund goes live.

The credit fund is being built with a deliberately small team. Instead of hiring several analysts and operations staff, we want one senior technical hire who can do both: engineer the platform and sit across the table from investors and borrowers. Underwriting here is built on real payment telemetry — including Xsolla transaction data — and that data edge is the foundation of this role.

Strong SQL, Python, and production automation skills are essential, along with real experience in portfolio analytics, market risk, or credit. The ability to ship audit-grade systems and then defend the numbers in front of LPs and borrowers will be key to your success in this role. Responsibilities

First 6 months — priorities in order

- Deal pipeline live: origination intake through credit committee, with the full audit trail. - Scoring data layer: borrower financials and payment telemetry ingested, stored, and under documented data contracts. - LP / fundraising pipeline instrumented, and first investor reporting shipped.

Explicitly out of scope: legal documentation, fund administration, and accounting — these sit with external providers.

Phase 1: Build (through first close)

Deal pipeline management

- Design and run the full deal workflow: origination intake, screening, scoring, credit committee, closing.

- Implement it as governed automation (workflow orchestration such as n8n or similar, with LLM-assisted steps where they add value): every automated output validated against a defined schema, low-confidence results routed to human review, and a complete audit trail suitable for LP due diligence.

Scoring and underwriting data layer

- Build the ingestion and storage layer for borrower financials and payments telemetry (including Xsolla transaction data) — PostgreSQL or equivalent, ETL pipelines, materialized views, documented data contracts.

- Develop credit scoring and forecasting models in Python, with proper train/test discipline, leakage and PII exclusion, and ongoing monitoring for drift and degradation.

- Maintain evaluation and regression checks so model and automation quality is measured continuously, not assumed.

Fundraising / LP pipeline

- Build and operate the investor pipeline: CRM automation, conference and referral pipeline tracking, follow-up orchestration, and data room preparation and upkeep.

- Instrument the pipeline so we always know conversion rates, stage aging, and next actions per LP.

Investor and borrower dashboards

- Ship reporting for both audiences: fund-level metrics for investors, facility-level metrics for borrowers.

- Numbers must reconcile to source systems and be reproducible outside the BI tool — audit-grade, not demo-grade. Tableau / Power BI or a lightweight web dashboard, whichever fits.

Reliability, cost, and security of the stack

- Budget caps and cost monitoring on all AI-assisted automation; regression canaries before changes ship.

- Access control and data protection appropriate for fund data: deny-by-default permissions, audit logs, strict handling of LP identities, borrower financials, and deal terms.

- Documented runbooks and handover-ready documentation as part of “done” — the stack must be operable by someone other than its author.

Phase 2: Operate (post-close)

- Move into an operating role on the underwriting side: portfolio monitoring, covenant and collateral tracking, scenario and stress analysis.

- Extend the platform to other investment types and support the capital formation team with the same pipeline and reporting infrastructure.

Client and investor facing

This is not a back-office role. The person will join investor and borrower meetings, present the dashboards and the numbers behind them, and field diligence questions directly. Fluency in finance conversations is as important as engineering. The person will also respond to LP operational due diligence questionnaires on the data and automation stack.

Qualifications and Skills

Required

- 7+ years across data analytics / data engineering, including recent hands-on experience building and running production automation (not prototypes or notebooks).

- Proven production experience with LLM-based automation: schema-validated outputs, human review gates, evaluation and regression testing, cost-tiered model routing.

- Strong SQL and Python; ownership of a PostgreSQL (or similar) data platform end to end — ETL, materialized views, performance tuning, data contracts.

- Workflow orchestration experience (n8n, Airflow, or comparable).

- BI and dashboarding: Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, or equivalent web dashboards; a track record of reporting that executives actually used for decisions.

- Security discipline for sensitive data: role-based access, deny-by-default policies, audit trails, PII handling.

- Finance background: degree in finance or quantitative field plus real experience in portfolio analytics, market risk, or credit — able to hold their own in an underwriting or investor conversation.

- Strong written and spoken English; comfortable presenting to senior external audiences.

Preferred

- Direct exposure to private credit, lending, or fund operations.

- Forecasting and statistical modeling track record (capacity planning, SLA/risk forecasting, or similar).

- Experience with embeddings / semantic search and multi-model AI setups.

The Difference You Will Make:

We are looking for a passionate data scientist to lead quantitative measurement efforts and bring novel scientific approaches to drive decision making across our platform’s payment experience. This data scientist will perform careful hypothesis generation, causal inference framework development, and model development/evaluation to ideate and drive payment strategies on our platform. This role will have a particular focus on payments fraud mitigation and loss optimization, with the goal of making our platform safer for our community.

Our Data Scientists have a deep understanding of causal framework development, statistical analysis, machine learning model development and evaluation strategies, and the complications of running experiment/quasi-experimental methods in a two-sided marketplace. They have keen business sense and are able to develop novel solutions to fraud and risk problems that don’t have an established playbook and utilize their findings to communicate across a wide range of partners to drive our data & product roadmaps. They are not only the trusted data expert on their team, but also a storyteller.

Examples of projects you may work on include, development of novel metrics and frameworks that can efficiently measure outcomes (often balancing competing tradeoffs), generating deep root cause investigations and long term impact measurements, and building/evaluating ML and agentic models to optimize guest, host, and business outcomes.

A Typical Day:

• Inference: Develop and apply causal inference methods, including experimental, econometric regressions, and quasi-experimental methods to measure a wide-range of platform/product impacts.
• AI/ML: Build methods for robust evaluation of ML/AI model efficiency and performance. Ability to identify use-cases for and develop predictive models to classify, segment, and interpret our users’ behavior. Support evaluation and optimization of agentic and LLM-based systems.
• Optimization: Develop methodologies to explore/simulate the impact of new interventions and develop data products to optimize product/operational strategies.
• Communication: Deliver robust research reports and effective data visualizations. Collaborate with and present to stakeholders to identify opportunities and communicate findings, and drive impact.
• Empowerment: Think strategically about opportunities to improve and scale our brand measurement and customer insights.

Your Expertise:

• 5+ years of industry experience in a quantitative analysis role with a Master’s degree in a quantitative field (math / economics / statistics, and etc.), or 3+ years of experience with a Phd degree.
• Strong knowledge of causal inference, experimentation, applied statistical modeling, and end-to-end ML development.
• Skilled in statistical programming (Python or R) and database usage (SQL)
• Demonstrated track record of owning a business or technical domain end-to-end at a prior company: setting your own roadmap, being the accountable expert others escalate to, and driving a problem to resolution.
• Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively to audiences of varying technical levels
• Ability to work independently, set your own roadmap, and drive cross-functional alignment
• Payments Fraud/Risk Domain expertise is a strong plus.
• Familiarity with evaluating agentic or LLM-based systems (e.g., decision-quality measurement, human-in-the-loop calibration) is a plus.

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
